Fleet Week
I love memorial day. I know it is supposed to be a sad holiday - to remember all those who fought in the armed forces for our country, but why be morbid…
I used to want to "get away" for Memorial Day when I lived in North Carolina or Utah. But now that I live in the great city of New York, there is no reason to get away. There are what I like to call "Seas of Sailors" that drop in for Fleet Week. It is a beautiful thing… all the big Navy boats sailing in and docking at the piers in Manhattan. The Navy boys are usually pretty young but they are still fun to hang out with.
My cousin Jenn and I went out Sailor Shopping for Memorial Day weekend. We went to the boats and took a tour. I got an explanation at how to use a big gun thing (I don’t know what it is called, but it kind of looked like a grenade launcher).
At night we bar hopped in the Village. We ended up at a great Japanese Karaoke bar (after following some boys in white). Jenn had never sang Karoke before and she brought the house down with Bohemian Rhapsody.
A very good looking young sailor sat down next to me and started chatting. He was 21. Ahhhh… And of course, a much older man sat down right next to Jenn. And he started talking to her. I find this so ironic.
I got up and introduced the young sailor to my cousin and then excused myself for several minutes on purpose. I was hoping that they would strike up a conversation but no luck. Oh well.
We got home at 4am. Nothing like staying out late in the city, drinking, then having to wait for the PATH train in the middle of the night. It is pure misery! But definitely a good night.
